Indian authorities have evacuated tens of thousands of residents from vulnerable coastal communities as Cyclone Arnab intensifies over the Bay of Bengal, threatening powerful winds, torrential rainfall and flooding across parts of the country's eastern coastline.
The India Meteorological Department classified Arnab as a very severe cyclonic storm on Tuesday, October 27, and issued its highest-level cyclone warning for Andhra Pradesh and adjoining southern Odisha.
The storm is forecast to make landfall along the Andhra Pradesh–Yanam coastline between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam, near Yanam, on Wednesday morning, October 28.
According to the latest meteorological assessments, maximum sustained winds could reach 125 to 135 kilometres per hour, with gusts of up to 150 kilometres per hour.
The forecast remains subject to changes in the storm's movement and intensity.
Authorities in Andhra Pradesh had evacuated more than 89,000 people by Tuesday, according to the Associated Press.
Earlier, state disaster management officials told Reuters that approximately 400,000 people in vulnerable areas could require evacuation as the cyclone approached.
The two figures reflect different stages of the emergency response and should not be interpreted as the same measurement.
More than 12 million people live along the storm's projected path, although that does not mean every resident faces the same level of danger or will need to evacuate.
Emergency officials have established more than 2,000 cyclone shelters across 20 districts and deployed approximately 1,100 medical teams to assist affected communities.
Authorities have also secured more than 30,000 fishing boats and distributed emergency alerts to millions of mobile phones.
In neighbouring Odisha, officials prepared to evacuate approximately 48,000 residents from areas considered vulnerable to the storm.
Schools and colleges in several districts have been closed as a precaution, while railway operators have cancelled or suspended services on affected routes.
Coastal communities have reported worsening weather, with strong winds, heavy rainfall and increasingly dangerous sea conditions.
Meteorologists warn that intense rainfall could cause flash flooding, damage roads and disrupt electricity and telecommunications networks.
Low-lying coastal settlements are particularly vulnerable to storm surges and flooding, while fishing communities face substantial risks from rough seas.
Satellite observations from India's INSAT-3DS spacecraft show the cyclone developing organised cloud bands and intense thunderstorm activity over the Bay of Bengal.
The India Meteorological Department continues to monitor its movement and issue updated warnings.
Cyclones regularly affect India's eastern coastline, but the scale of Arnab's projected impact has prompted an extensive emergency response.
For authorities, the immediate priority is completing evacuations before conditions deteriorate further, ensuring shelters are adequately supplied and positioning rescue teams for rapid deployment.
Residents in threatened districts have been urged to follow official evacuation instructions, avoid unnecessary travel and remain away from the sea.
As of the latest reviewed reports, Cyclone Arnab had not yet made landfall, and a comprehensive assessment of damage or casualties was not available.
The next critical development will be the storm's arrival along the coast on Wednesday, when its actual intensity, track and humanitarian consequences can be assessed.
