Microsoft has offered voluntary exit packages to approximately 60,000 employees, potentially covering more than a quarter of its global workforce, as the technology company reshapes its operations amid heavy investment in artificial intelligence.
The programme, announced on Monday, October 26, applies to eligible employees in participating divisions across the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and India.
Microsoft's Chief People Officer, Amy Coleman, confirmed the new Voluntary Exit Offer in a communication published on the company's official blog.
The company said the programme would allow eligible employees considering opportunities outside Microsoft to leave with financial assistance and career-planning support.
It is a voluntary initiative rather than an announcement that 60,000 positions have been eliminated.
The estimated number of eligible employees was reported by Reuters, citing Business Insider and company information, and separately by the Associated Press.
Microsoft employed approximately 223,000 full-time workers worldwide at the end of June, meaning the offer could reach around 27% of its workforce.
Eligibility is limited to employees at level 70 and below in selected business units.
According to Reuters, participating operations include AI Experiences, Copilot, finance, human resources, Xbox and Windows and Devices.
Other divisions, including marketing, commercial business and security, are excluded from the current programme.
The company has not disclosed how many eligible employees it expects to accept the offer.
Coleman said the initiative builds on lessons from an earlier voluntary retirement programme and is intended to give individual teams greater flexibility as their requirements change.
The announcement follows several rounds of workforce adjustments during 2026.
Microsoft previously offered voluntary retirement packages to thousands of employees and announced additional job cuts affecting its gaming and other businesses.
The latest initiative comes as the company continues investing substantial sums in data centres, processors, cloud infrastructure and other resources required to develop and operate advanced AI systems.
Microsoft has been expanding its Azure cloud platform and integrating its Copilot AI assistant into software products used by businesses and consumers worldwide.
The scale of AI investment has prompted wider debate across the technology industry about the relationship between automation, workforce requirements and long-term profitability.
Companies are spending heavily to secure computing capacity while seeking to demonstrate that AI services can generate sustainable revenue.
Microsoft has also faced growing scrutiny from investors over the financial returns from its infrastructure commitments.
The company is scheduled to report its latest quarterly earnings on Wednesday, October 28, when analysts are expected to examine cloud growth, capital expenditure and the performance of its AI-related businesses.
The workforce announcement does not establish that artificial intelligence will directly replace all employees who choose to leave.
Nor does it mean that everyone receiving an offer is expected or required to depart.
For employees, the immediate decision concerns whether to accept a time-limited package or remain in their current roles.
For Microsoft, the programme represents another significant adjustment in how one of the world's largest technology companies manages its workforce during an expensive period of AI expansion.
The eventual effect on employment will depend on the number of employees who voluntarily accept the packages and any further organisational decisions announced by the company.
