Brazil’s Supreme Court extended voting hours in Sunday’s presidential runoff, prompting the electoral authority to pause national vote tallying.
Justice Cristiano Zanin ordered voting extended by up to two hours, until 19:00 Brasília time, Agência Brasil reported. That corresponds to 23:00 in Nigeria. The decision followed complaints about transport difficulties affecting voters.
Reuters reported that the electoral authority paused a tally that had already begun publishing early results. The contest pits President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva against Senator Flávio Bolsonaro.
Subsequent reporting said Zanin clarified that the extension applied to polling stations still open, while counting could continue in sections that had already closed.
The interruption does not establish an election winner or invalidate votes already cast. Final results remained pending in the reporting reviewed.
