Zee Entertainment Profit Falls 47% as Ad Revenue Weakens
India’s Zee Entertainment Enterprises reported a sharp decline in quarterly profit on August 10 as weaker advertising revenue and higher spending tied to its return to sports broadcasting weighed on earnings.
The Mumbai-based media group posted consolidated net profit of about 763 million rupees ($8 million) for the quarter ended June 30, down 46.9% from 1.44 billion rupees a year earlier. Total income, however, increased 4.8% to 19.39 billion rupees.
Advertising remains one of Zee’s major revenue sources, but quarterly ad revenue fell 11.5% to 6.71 billion rupees. Subscription revenue moved in the opposite direction, rising 15.8% to 11.37 billion rupees as pricing and digital subscriptions improved.
The results arrive shortly after Zee returned to major sports broadcasting. The company secured Indian rights to 39 FIFA events through 2034, including the 2026 and 2030 men’s World Cups, as it seeks to strengthen both television and streaming audiences.
That expansion is already increasing costs. Zee’s total expenses climbed 12.8% year-on-year to 18.64 billion rupees, while advertising and publicity spending rose 62.4% to 4.47 billion rupees. The company said programming and promotional costs were affected by FIFA coverage and the launch of sports channels.
There were signs that the sports strategy is helping the digital side of the business. Zee’s investor materials show ZEE5 revenue growing 58% year-on-year, while Reuters reported that weekly active users on the platform doubled following the start of the World Cup.
For the wider media industry, Zee’s quarter shows the trade-off facing broadcasters investing heavily in sports: major events can attract audiences, subscribers and advertising demand, but rights, production and marketing costs can place short-term pressure on profitability.
