Instagram Unveils First Major Brand Refresh in a Decade
Instagram has refreshed one of the most recognisable parts of its identity, introducing a redesigned wordmark and broader visual system as the Meta-owned platform updates its branding for a new generation of creators.
The change was announced on August 13, 2026, and marks the first major update to Instagram’s wordmark in roughly a decade. The familiar multicoloured camera app icon remains, while the handwritten “Instagram” lettering that appears across the platform and its marketing has been redrawn.
Instagram head Adam Mosseri confirmed the change directly through his official Threads account, saying the old wordmark had begun to feel dated after more than 10 years. He described the replacement as cleaner and more modern while retaining references to Instagram’s original visual character.
The update extends beyond the wordmark.
Instagram’s official design team says the new brand system includes changes across type, motion and colour, while the company has expanded its typography with updated Instagram Sans alongside new type families including Instagram Pen and Instagram Mono.
The company says the redesign is intended to put creators and user-generated work at the centre of the brand rather than relying on heavy corporate graphics. Its official brand page introduces the refresh under the positioning “Yours to make,” framing the identity around creativity and individual expression.
The rollout immediately became a social-media story in its own right.
Users on Instagram and Threads began comparing the new lettering with the outgoing design within hours. Some criticised the readability of the new wordmark, with jokes that portions of the lettering make “Instagram” appear to read differently. Others welcomed the move away from the decade-old script.
