Apple Develops China-Specific AI Model With Alibaba Support
Apple has developed its own large language model specifically for China with support from Alibaba, marking a significant change in the company’s strategy for bringing Apple Intelligence to one of its most important overseas markets.
The China-focused model was trained with Alibaba’s assistance, according to three people familiar with the project cited by Reuters in an exclusive report published on August 14, 2026. Apple had previously been expected to rely primarily on models supplied by Chinese technology companies for generative AI features on devices sold in the country.
Neither Apple nor Alibaba has publicly confirmed the newly reported model, and both companies declined Reuters’ requests for comment. The development should therefore be described as source-based reporting rather than a formally announced Apple product.
Apple Intelligence is expected to reach China in the coming months following an iOS update, according to Reuters’ sources. The company recently cleared an important regulatory hurdle when China’s Cyberspace Administration registered its generative AI service.
Alibaba is still expected to play a central role. Reuters previously reported that Alibaba’s Qwen technology would be incorporated into Apple Intelligence on compatible iPhones, iPads, Macs and Vision Pro devices sold in China, alongside technology from Baidu.
The newly revealed Apple-trained model suggests the company may now use a more complex arrangement combining its own technology with approved Chinese AI systems.
Exactly how those models will work together remains unclear. Reuters reported that the role of Apple’s proprietary China model alongside Alibaba and other local models has not yet been established publicly.
China presents a unique problem for Apple’s global AI strategy. Services including OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude are not officially available there, while Chinese regulations require generative AI systems offered to the public to pass regulatory requirements.
