YouTube Commits £3 Million to Grow UK Creator Economy
YouTube has announced a £3 million three-year investment in the UK creator economy and wider screen industries, expanding training for digital creators and traditional production professionals as the boundaries between YouTube, film and television continue to narrow.
The funding was unveiled on August 24, 2026, with YouTube UK Managing Director Alison Lomax saying the programme is intended to widen access to advanced digital-production skills and support creative careers outside London.
Of the £3 million commitment, £2 million will go toward training programmes delivered with the National Film and Television School, expanding an existing partnership between YouTube and the NFTS.
The investment will cover areas including digital production, audience development and next-generation creative tools, with specific attention to news and children’s content.
YouTube is also expanding the NFTS-led Creator Incubator, which was established to give emerging digital creators more formal training in areas such as production, editing, channel strategy and audience analysis.
The wider initiative is deliberately regional. UK Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy said the programme is targeting 80% of participants from outside London, with the government presenting the investment as part of efforts to spread creative-industry opportunities across the country.
The announcement arrives as traditional British broadcasters are themselves moving more aggressively toward creator-led and YouTube-first programming.
Earlier this year, the BBC, YouTube and NFTS launched Create x Connect, a joint training programme for television producers, digital creators and journalists. The BBC is also now commissioning original programmes specifically designed for YouTube rather than simply republishing television material on the platform.
