Netflix Nearly Doubles Upfront Ad Commitments as Advertising Push Accelerates
Netflix says it has nearly doubled advertising commitments secured during its latest U.S. upfront negotiations, another sign that advertising is becoming a much bigger part of the streaming company’s business.
The company closed its 2026 upfront sales process after reaching agreements with major advertising holding companies and independent agencies, according to reporting published August 10. Netflix had entered the negotiations targeting close to twice the commitments it secured a year earlier.
The result comes four years after Netflix introduced its advertising-supported subscription option, reversing its long-standing reliance on subscriptions alone.
Netflix has already said its advertising business now reaches more than 250 million monthly active viewers globally, with more than 80% of members on its ad-supported plan watching Netflix each week. Those figures are company-reported measurements.
The company is also taking the advertising model into more markets. Beginning in 2027, Netflix plans to introduce its ads plan in 15 additional countries, including Colombia, Peru, Indonesia, the Philippines, Ireland, Poland, Sweden and New Zealand.
Latin America is already becoming particularly important. Netflix reported in May that its advertising-supported service had more than 35 million monthly active viewers in Brazil and 28 million in Mexico.
At the same time, Netflix is widening the types of content advertisers can buy around. Advertising inventory connected with video podcasts and the company's vertical mobile-video format is scheduled to become available globally in 2027.
Artificial intelligence is also moving into the advertising operation. Netflix says it is testing AI agents capable of helping manage, optimise and purchase campaigns, alongside tools that adapt existing brand creative for formats such as vertical video and pause ads.
