India's Jio Platforms surged more than 21 percent on its stock-market debut on Wednesday, October 28, reaching a valuation of approximately $131.5 billion after completing the country's largest-ever initial public offering.
Shares in the telecommunications and digital-services company opened at ₹1,358 on the National Stock Exchange in Mumbai, compared with an IPO price of ₹1,119.
The strong opening made Jio India's second-most valuable publicly traded company by market capitalisation, behind its parent, Reliance Industries, and ahead of Bharti Airtel and HDFC Bank.
The debut followed a record $3.2 billion share offering that attracted exceptionally strong demand from domestic and international investors.
Jio's IPO received subscriptions exceeding 22 times the shares offered, according to exchange and market data. The offering also drew significant interest from institutional investors, reflecting the scale of expectations surrounding the company's future.
The listing marks the first major stock-market flotation from Mukesh Ambani's Reliance conglomerate in approximately two decades.
It represents a significant milestone in the group's transformation from a business historically associated with oil refining and petrochemicals into one with substantial operations in telecommunications, retail, digital services and emerging technologies.
Jio's mobile network serves more than 530 million customers in India, making it one of the world's largest telecommunications businesses by subscriber numbers.
Since its commercial launch in 2016, the company has played a major role in expanding access to affordable mobile data across India, intensifying competition and accelerating the adoption of digital services.
Its expansion has also attracted major international investors, including Meta Platforms and Alphabet's Google.
The company has broadened its ambitions beyond telecommunications into artificial intelligence, cloud computing, enterprise services and digital infrastructure.
The listing ceremony in Mumbai was attended by Mukesh Ambani and members of his family, including Akash Ambani, who is managing director of Jio Platforms.
The flotation gives investors an opportunity to own shares directly in Jio's digital and telecommunications businesses rather than gaining exposure only through its parent company.
It also provides the market with a separate valuation for one of Reliance Industries' most important growth businesses.
The offering comes during a challenging period for Indian equities, with higher international oil prices, geopolitical tensions and uncertainty over global interest rates weighing on investor sentiment.
Despite those conditions, Jio's debut demonstrated strong demand for a major technology and telecommunications business with an established customer base.
India has become one of the world's most active markets for initial public offerings in 2026. The Jio transaction reinforces its importance as a destination for major equity fundraising.
However, analysts have cautioned that a successful opening session does not guarantee sustained share-price gains.
Jio faces continuing competition in telecommunications, substantial capital expenditure requirements and regulatory risks involving spectrum allocation, licensing and industry fees.
Its future performance will depend on its ability to grow earnings, improve returns on investment and develop profitable services beyond mobile connectivity.
The 21 percent rise reflects the opening market response, while the $131.5 billion valuation is based on the company's debut trading price rather than its original IPO valuation.
For investors and the wider Indian economy, the listing is a landmark corporate event that will test whether the country's rapidly expanding digital sector can sustain the confidence demonstrated during the offering.
