The White House announced on Friday that a temporary ceasefire in the Russian-occupied Ukrainian city of Oleshky would begin on October 29, allowing humanitarian aid deliveries and preparations for civilian evacuation through a designated safe passageway.
It credited First Lady Melania Trump and her representative with negotiating the arrangement directly with Russian and Ukrainian leaders.
Ukrainian negotiator David Arakhamia said a ceasefire and an operation to establish permanent humanitarian corridors would begin soon, Reuters reported. Russia had not immediately confirmed the arrangement.
The announcement concerns a future, localized pause. It does not establish that fighting has already stopped or that a nationwide ceasefire has been agreed.
Whether the operation delivers safe access for aid workers and residents will depend on implementation when the announced start date arrives.
