A Russian drone has struck a passenger train near Ukraine’s border with Poland, shortly after senior foreign officials travelled through the same railway station, according to Ukraine’s state rail operator.
The attack occurred at Yahodyn station on Sunday, September 13, approximately two kilometres from Polish territory. Ukrzaliznytsia said a diplomatic train carrying former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt and security advisers from several European Union countries had departed earlier than scheduled.
A separate train carrying former CIA director David Petraeus was reportedly still at the station when the drone hit. The affected passenger train was evacuated as the drone approached, and authorities reported no casualties.
Ukrzaliznytsia said it was highly probable that the diplomatic train had been the intended target. That remains an official Ukrainian assessment rather than an independently confirmed finding about Russia’s targeting decision.
Bildt subsequently shared video from the area and said the drone struck a train that had been travelling only minutes behind his delegation. Johnson condemned the attack on civilian railway infrastructure.
Russia’s Defence Ministry said its forces had targeted infrastructure used to transport military cargo from Europe, but it did not specifically confirm that it intended to hit the diplomatic train.
Earlier on Sunday, another Russian drone struck a truck less than one kilometre from Poland, temporarily disrupting operations at the Yahodyn–Dorohusk border crossing. Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski described the increasing attacks near NATO territory as an escalation.
