Nigeria’s disease-control agency says it is monitoring 53 contacts linked to the confirmed Ebola case in Abuja and has approved emergency weekly support of ₦100,000 per person for people placed in isolation or quarantine.
NCDC Director-General Jide Idris announced the payment at a briefing on Sunday, 25 October, Punch reported. He said the arrangement followed complaints about the financial burden of monitoring, including maintaining families. The emergency measure will be reviewed as the response progresses.
The contact total has increased from 44 to 53. Those identified include 44 people associated with the healthcare facility where the patient received treatment and nine additional contacts, according to coverage of the briefing.
Premium Times reported that Idris also clarified that a suspected case in Rivers State tested negative. Contacts under monitoring should not be counted as confirmed infections.
The latest information expands the account of Nigeria’s containment response; it does not establish additional confirmed Ebola cases.
