Israel is holding its first parliamentary election since the Hamas-led attacks of October 7, 2023, in a closely contested vote that could determine whether Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu remains in power after years of war and political turmoil.
Nationwide voting is scheduled to run from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. local time on Tuesday, October 27, with approximately 7.3 million people eligible to elect the 120 members of the Knesset.
The election follows Israel's military campaigns in Gaza, Lebanon and Iran, and comes amid intense debate over national security, government accountability, judicial independence and the country's international relations.
Netanyahu, Israel's longest-serving prime minister, is seeking another term with his Likud party and its nationalist, religious and far-right allies.
His principal challenger is Gadi Eisenkot, a former military chief whose Yashar party has emerged as a leading opposition force.
Eisenkot has criticised Netanyahu's handling of the security failures surrounding the October 2023 attacks and called for greater accountability. Netanyahu has defended his wartime leadership and presented his relationship with US President Donald Trump as an advantage for Israel's security.
Opinion polls published before the vote suggest a close contest, but neither Netanyahu's bloc nor the main opposition parties are assured of winning the 61 parliamentary seats required to form a government.
The result may therefore depend on smaller parties, including those representing ultra-Orthodox and Arab Israeli voters, and on negotiations after the election.
Israel's proportional electoral system requires parties to receive at least 3.25% of valid votes to enter parliament. Even a relatively small shift in support could alter the balance between competing blocs.
The campaign has also been shaped by disputes over military-service exemptions for ultra-Orthodox men, the cost of living and calls for an independent inquiry into the October 7 attacks.
The election carries consequences beyond Israel.
A change in government could influence relations with Washington, approaches to the Gaza ceasefire, settlement policy in the occupied West Bank and decisions concerning Iran.
However, the opposition's positions on several major security issues overlap with those of the current government, and a change of leadership would not automatically produce a change in regional policy.
Television exit polls are expected after voting closes at 10 p.m. local time, but they will be projections rather than official results.
The final outcome may take days to establish, with formal results expected in early November. Coalition negotiations could continue considerably longer.
For now, the central question is whether Netanyahu can assemble another parliamentary majority or whether his opponents can unite behind an alternative government.
