The United States Federal Bureau of Investigation says an international operation targeting suspected cybercrime networks has resulted in nine arrests in Nigeria, the seizure of 53 electronic devices and the identification of $11 million in potentially freezable funds across several countries.
FBI Director Kash Patel announced the results of Operation Blackout in a public statement over the weekend, with Nigerian media reporting the development on Monday, October 26.
Patel said the operation targeted suspected international fraud networks accused of exploiting victims and stealing their savings through cross-border scams.
He thanked Nigerian law-enforcement authorities and partners in London for cooperating with the investigation.
The FBI director did not disclose the identities of the nine suspects, the locations of the arrests or the specific Nigerian agencies involved.
Authorities also have not publicly provided a detailed breakdown of the alleged offences or confirmed whether formal criminal charges have been filed against each suspect.
The $11 million figure refers to funds identified by investigators as potentially eligible for freezing. It does not mean that the full amount has already been seized, recovered or returned to victims.
The operation reflects growing international cooperation against cyber-enabled financial crime, particularly schemes that move money and communications across national borders.
The FBI has previously worked with Nigerian authorities on investigations involving online investment fraud, romance scams and other forms of financial exploitation.
Such investigations frequently require coordination among multiple jurisdictions because victims, suspects, financial institutions and digital platforms may be located in different countries.
The latest operation could provide investigators with electronic evidence and financial records relevant to identifying additional participants and tracing suspected proceeds.
However, the public information released so far does not establish the guilt of the nine individuals.
Their legal responsibility, if charges are brought, will have to be determined through the appropriate judicial proceedings.
The immediate next steps will be to clarify the suspects' legal status, establish the nature of the alleged fraud and determine whether the identified assets can be lawfully frozen or recovered.
For Nigeria, the announcement highlights both the continuing challenge of international cybercrime and the importance of cooperation with foreign law-enforcement agencies.
