Spotify to Label AI Artists and Remove Them From Recommendations
Spotify is introducing a new “AI Persona” badge for artist profiles that represent AI-generated identities, as the streaming company moves to make it clearer when listeners are engaging with a virtual performer rather than a real person.
The change was announced on August 11, 2026, with the badges scheduled to begin appearing across Spotify in mid-September. They will be visible on artist profiles, in search results and alongside tracks in playlists.
Artists can begin identifying themselves as AI Personas through Spotify for Artists immediately. However, Spotify says it will not depend entirely on voluntary disclosure. The company will also review profiles whose names, images and public identities appear to represent photorealistic AI-generated performers.
Profiles identified through Spotify's own review may receive a “Likely AI Persona” designation. Artists will be notified when Spotify applies the label and will be able to appeal the decision. Listener reporting of suspected AI Personas is also planned for a future update.
The most significant change affects music discovery.
Spotify says music from AI Personas will not be included by default in its editorial playlists or algorithmic recommendations. Listeners who deliberately follow an AI Persona may still encounter that artist through personalised recommendations.
The company is drawing an important distinction between an AI-generated identity and music created with AI tools. The new badge is intended to describe who or what the artist publicly represents, rather than determine whether artificial intelligence was used in writing, vocals or production. Spotify already has separate AI Credits designed to disclose AI involvement in the creation of music.
