The Emmy Awards will move to Prime Video in 2027 under a six-year agreement making Amazon’s streaming platform the ceremony’s exclusive global home.
The Television Academy and Prime Video announced the agreement on Tuesday, 6 October. Beginning with the 2027 ceremony, the Emmys will continue to be presented live in September but will be available through one worldwide streaming service instead of rotating among traditional US television networks.
Amazon says viewers will be able to watch the ceremony free through Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories, without needing a Prime membership. The Television Academy’s announcement describes the reach as more than 200 countries. The two formulations are broadly consistent, although the precise country-by-country availability has not yet been published.
The agreement replaces the Television Academy’s longstanding “Wheel Deal,” under which the Emmy telecast moved between ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC. That arrangement concluded with the 2026 ceremony.
The shift gives the Emmys a dedicated distributor at a time when streaming companies are acquiring more live sports, awards programmes and other event television. It also means that international viewers will no longer depend on separate national broadcast agreements to the same extent, although local access requirements and technical availability for the 2027 show remain to be detailed.
The Emmys were first presented in 1949 and recognise achievement across television acting, writing, directing, production and technical disciplines. The new distribution agreement concerns how the principal ceremony will reach audiences; neither organisation announced changes to award eligibility, voting or the Television Academy’s role in selecting recipients.
Prime Video and the academy also plan year-round programming and audience experiences connected to the awards, but they have not disclosed detailed formats or a release schedule. Financial terms were not announced.
The agreement gives Amazon a prominent live global entertainment property while offering the Television Academy a consistent distribution partner. Its practical effect will become clearer when the partners announce the 2027 ceremony date, hosts, production team and regional viewing arrangements.
