Disney and TikTok Strike Global Deal to Bring Creator Videos to Disney+
Disney and TikTok have signed a global content-sharing agreement that will bring selected TikTok creator videos into Disney+, while giving creators access to approved material from Disney’s film and television library.
The partnership will begin with a pilot in the United States before expanding to other markets. Participating creators who opt into the programme will be able to produce short-form videos using material connected to Disney properties including Marvel, Pixar, Star Wars and FX. Selected videos will appear both on TikTok and inside Verts, Disney+’s vertical-video section.
The agreement is unusual because it allows user-created TikTok content to move directly onto a major subscription streaming service. Reuters reported that it is the first arrangement of its kind between TikTok and a traditional media company.
Disney and TikTok are also creating a Disney Creator Ambassador Program that will give selected creators additional visibility, access to events and career-development opportunities.
The deal comes as entertainment companies pay closer attention to the role short-form video plays in helping audiences discover films and television programmes. TikTok says users generated an average of 6.5 million film and television-related posts each day last year. In research commissioned by TikTok and conducted by Ipsos across seven markets, nearly half of surveyed viewers said they had watched a film or television programme after first discovering related content on TikTok. Those figures come from TikTok-backed research and should be read as company-provided data rather than independent industry measurement.
For Disney, the arrangement turns some of the fan activity that normally happens outside its streaming service into content that can also live inside Disney+. For TikTok creators, it provides a more formal route to work with some of the entertainment industry's most recognisable intellectual property.
It also brings two areas of entertainment distribution closer together. Streaming services have traditionally focused on professionally produced films and television, while TikTok built its reach around short-form creator content. Under this agreement, those formats will begin appearing within the same Disney+ environment.
