Rhode Island has sued Meta, alleging that it failed to curb advertisements promoting fraudulent products and financial scams despite assuring users that it worked to prevent them.
Attorney General Peter Neronha announced the action on Thursday, October 22. His office alleges that Meta helped create, refine and distribute deceptive advertisements, in violation of the state’s Deceptive Trade Practices Act.
The state is seeking civil penalties, consumer restitution and an order requiring changes to the company’s practices, Reuters reported.
Meta said it would contest the lawsuit, describing it as unfounded. Spokesperson Andy Stone said the company works with law enforcement against scam networks and has introduced additional safeguards.
The allegations remain contested. The filing does not establish liability or award compensation to consumers.
