Artificial intelligence company Anthropic has publicly filed for an initial public offering in the United States, setting the stage for what could become one of the largest stock market debuts in history.
The San Francisco-based developer of the Claude AI assistant disclosed its financial performance and business risks in a registration statement made public on Monday, October 26.
The company intends to list its shares on the Nasdaq Global Select Market under the ticker symbol ANT, although the number of shares to be offered and their proposed price have not been announced.
The filing represents a major step towards Anthropic's transition from a privately held company to a publicly traded business.
According to financial information disclosed in the prospectus, Anthropic generated approximately $16.3 billion in revenue during the first six months of 2026.
However, the company also reported a net loss of $80.7 billion over the same period, compared with approximately $13 billion a year earlier.
Reuters reported that much of the increased loss reflected accounting adjustments associated with the rising value of financial instruments convertible into company shares.
The figures highlight the financial scale of the artificial intelligence industry, where rapid commercial growth has been accompanied by substantial spending on computing infrastructure and advanced model development.
Anthropic was valued at $965 billion during a private fundraising round in May.
Market expectations now place its potential public valuation substantially higher, with some investors considering figures around $1.5 trillion.
Those estimates remain speculative. The company's final valuation will depend on the terms of the offering and investor demand.
The proposed listing also comes amid increasing scrutiny of the financial sustainability of artificial intelligence development.
Technology companies are committing enormous resources to data centres, advanced processors and the infrastructure required to train and operate increasingly sophisticated AI systems.
Anthropic has acknowledged that its computing expenses are expected to remain a major operating cost.
The company's chief executive, Dario Amodei, has also publicly raised concerns about the potential risks associated with increasingly powerful artificial intelligence.
Those concerns feature prominently in Anthropic's regulatory disclosures, reflecting the challenges of commercialising advanced AI while addressing safety and governance questions.
The proposed offering would place Anthropic among the most closely watched companies entering public markets, potentially establishing a benchmark for how investors value the rapidly expanding artificial intelligence industry.
A confirmed listing date has not been announced.
